Penis Envy (PE) is one of the most sought-after Psilocybe cubensis varieties — known for its striking appearance, dense fruiting bodies, and reputation for potency. It’s also one of the slower and more demanding

varieties to grow. This guide walks you through what makes PE different and how to give it the best chance of success from the start.

If this is your very first grow, consider starting with a more forgiving variety like Golden Teacher or B+ to build your skills. PE rewards experience. If you’re set on PE, liquid culture gives you the best possible starting point.

What Makes Penis Envy Different?PE behaves differently from most other cubensis varieties in several important ways:

Step-by-Step: Growing Penis Envy

01	Inoculate grain jars with PE liquid culture Use 2–3cc of LC per quart jar. Flame sterilize your needle, wipe the injection port, and inject slowly. Work in a still air box or flow hood. See our full liquid culture guide for detailed technique.

02	Colonization — be patient PE colonizes slower than most varieties. Expect 14–30 days for full grain colonization at 22–25°C. Do not shake early — wait until at least 30% colonization before shaking to distribute. Healthy PE mycelium is bright white and ropy (rhizomorphic).

03	Prepare bulk substrate The most popular bulk substrate for PE is a coco coir / vermiculite (CVG) mix at field capacity. Some growers use sterilized manure-based substrates for heavier yields. PE responds well to a thick substrate layer (10–15cm).

04	Spawn to bulk When grain is fully colonized (100% white, firm), mix with bulk substrate at a 1:2 to 1:4 grain-to-substrate ratio. Pack into your fruiting container and seal the top with a thin casing layer if desired.

05	Colonize the bulk Seal the container and let it colonize at room temperature for 7–14 days. PE will be slower here too — don’t rush it. You’re looking for a fully white surface before initiating fruiting.

06	Initiate fruiting Introduce fruiting conditions: fresh air exchange 2–3x daily, humidity 90–95%, temperature 21–24°C, and indirect light 12 hours/day. PE typically takes 7–14 days to begin pinning after fruiting conditions are introduced.

07	Harvest Harvest PE just before or as the veil beneath the cap begins to tear — this is peak potency and before spore drop. PE caps are often thick and rounded compared to other cubensis. Twist and pull gently to avoid disturbing adjacent pins.

How Long Does Penis Envy Take to Grow?

Penis Envy is slower than almost every other Psilocybe cubensis strain, and that catches people out. If you have grown Golden Teacher or B+ and you are working from that mental clock, Penis Envy will look like it has stalled when it is simply taking its time.

Expect 8 to 12 weeks from inoculation to first harvest under good conditions. Golden Teacher will often finish in 6 to 8.

Ranges, not guarantees. Your grain hydration, spawn ratio, and how consistently you hold temperature will move every one of these numbers more than the strain does.

Why Penis Envy is slow

The same mutation that makes Penis Envy distinctive also makes it sluggish. The strain carries dense, thick-walled tissue and a cap that never opens the way a normal cubensis cap does. That density has to be built, and building it takes time and energy the mycelium would otherwise spend spreading.

It also means Penis Envy is far less forgiving of a cold room. At 20 °C a Golden Teacher grow slows down; a Penis Envy grow can sit apparently motionless for a fortnight. Most "my Penis Envy isn't doing anything" problems are temperature problems, not contamination.

The stage where people give up too early

Colonization. Four weeks on grain with no visible progress in the final week feels like failure — and with most strains it would be. With Penis Envy it is normal.

Before you throw a jar out, check the three things that actually indicate a problem:

• Smell. Healthy grain smells faintly of mushroom or fresh bread. Sour, sharp, or off means bacterial contamination.

• Colour. White and fluffy is fine, even if it's slow. Green, grey-green, or pink is not.

• Wet patches. Standing moisture or a slimy sheen means bacteria, not slow mycelium.

If none of the three are present, it isn't stalled — it's Penis Envy.

Why timing matters more with Penis Envy

Because of that unopened cap, Penis Envy barely drops spores. The veil doesn't tear the way it does on other cubensis, so a mature fruit releases very little.

This is why serious Penis Envy work is done from culture rather than spores. There is no reliable spore-based shortcut with this strain — a viable Penis Envy print is rare, and a syringe made from one is a genetic lottery on top of an already slow grow. Starting from live, isolated culture removes the colonization gamble and takes days off the front of the timeline, which is where most of Penis Envy's extra weeks are spent.

How long does a Penis Envy grow take start to finish?

From inoculation to first harvest, expect 6–10 weeks with PE — longer than most cubensis varieties. The slow colonization is normal. Rushing it by moving to fruiting conditions too early is one of the most common mistakes.

Why isn’t my PE pinning?

PE can be slow to pin, especially on the first flush. Ensure you have adequate fresh air exchange, the surface is fully colonized, and humidity is consistently above 90%. A cold shock (dropping temperature by 3–5°C overnight) can help trigger pinning.

How many flushes can I expect?

PE typically produces 2–3 strong flushes, with the second flush often being the largest. Some growers report up to 5 flushes with careful rehydration between flushes.

PE or Penis Envy Uncut — what’s the difference?
